For those who might be interested, I wanted to share a DIY Google Trekker-type backpack rig I threw together for around $200 brand new. This could certainly be done for quite a bit less than $200, but I used all new (purchased) materials so I could get a fair estimate of the cost from scratch. The backpack is an ALPS OutdoorZ Commander frame, and I took the center column from a light stand to use as the monopod. Lined the contact points of the frame with rubber tape and attached the monopod to the frame using some hose clamps. Lightweight, comfortable, ample cargo storage, and every bit as sturdy as I had hoped. Time to hit the trail!
